Young survivors of the Sri Lanka tsunami
PsyCorps was built on the premise that effective, sustainable and culturally appropriate mental health disaster interventions must be integrated into existing social and community networks. To this end, PsyCorps psychological support teams are designed to collaborate with government agencies, emergency services, health care and humanitarian aid agencies providing disaster relief. PsyCorps works to establish and mobilize psychological support teams comprised of local emergency responders, mental health professionals, civic leaders, representatives from religious and spiritual communities, and befrienders (trained community volunteers). Our goal is to empower local personnel and community members, in advance of a disaster, to be better equipped to provide coordinated psychological support for survivors and caregivers in the event of critical incidents and disaster.
PsyCorps' multidisciplinary Core Team plays a key role in establishing and mobilizing psychological support teams internationally and in the United States. Comprised of specialists in Family Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology, and Cross-Cultural Medical and Business Consulting, the Core Team facilitates team development and on-going clinical training.
