
The mission of PsyCorps is realized through the energy, compassion, and commitment of our outstanding volunteers. PsyCorps volunteers enable us to provide psychological first aid and triage support to disaster survivors and secondary psychological support and training to local first responders and caregivers, civic and religious leaders, and mental health care providers who serve disaster survivors.
PsyCorps is in the process of creating regional, volunteer, psychological support teams trained and prepared for immediate, organized response to disaster in a given region's locale or surrounding areas. Our focus is to empower locals to be enabled to deliver these services directly. These teams will be co-organized and supervised by volunteer mental health professionals. A mental health professional will be part of an administrative core of each team helping to recruit local volunteers (team members) called “befrienders” to provide psychological support to survivors, first responders and caregivers. The mental health professional provides on-going clinical supervision for the team and assists in training.
Volunteer Mental Health Professionals are trained and licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and mental health counselors. Criteria for Mental Health Professional are as follows:
